COCK FIGHTING: SABONG in Tagalog and BULANG in Hiligaynon (Ilonggo)
With the Cockfighting Law of 1974, President Ferdinand Marcos, stamped his mark on cock fighting with Presidential Decree No. 499, which officially recognised it as part of the Philippines national heritage.
At the Iloilo Coliseum, an International 7-Cock Derby is held once a year in line with the Feast of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (Our Lady of Candles), the patron saint of Jaro district.
Prize money can reach Php5,000,000 (approx USD108,000) and attracts 170 participants including the best fighting cock breeders from all over the country and abroad for what is touted as one of the biggest events of its kind in the Philippines.
Love it or loathe it, there is something gladiatorial and hypnotic about the whole process: the passion of the participants, and the conviction of the fighters... often to the death.
