pete ILONGGO NATION : Peter O'Driscoll
  • ILONGGO NATION

An ongoing project started in 2005, recording the people of the Ilonggo nation:

Between 1200-1250's, Ten Malay Datus [chieftains] together with their families, households and subordinates fled the tyrannical rule of Makatunaw, the Shri-Vijaya Sultan of Bornay (Borneo).

Led by Datu Puti, the Sultanate Minister, they landed in the Island of "Aninipay" or Panay. They bartered their gold and jewelry with the local Ati Chieftain Marikudo for the lowlands, plains and valleys of the Island they called "Madya-as" or Paradise. The land where time began; the birth of the Ilonggo Nation and the cradle of ancient Filipino civilization.

For about 300 years before the coming of the Spaniards, the Ilonggos lived in comparative prosperity and peace under an organised government, the "Katiringban et Madia-as" or the Confederation of Madya-as and with such laws as the Code of Kalantiaw.

On the 23rd December 1898 the last Capitol of the Spanish Empire in Asia was formally surrendered to the Independent Federal Republic of the Visayas by Governor-General Don Diego de Los Rios, after almost 400 years of foreign rule. The Ilonggo Nation was free again…….but this was only to be short lived:

William McKinley - (1843-1901) the 25th US President declared:

“Here are a people who have suffered”, "We can make them as free as ourselves, give them a government and country of their own, put a miniature of the American constitution afloat... start a brand new republic to take its place among the free nations of the world."

……..two days later warships from the U.S.A.’s Asian fleet anchor offshore and commenced shelling the city after it refused to surrender to their command and so the illegal invasion and occupation of the islands begins again.

    * During the invasion and occupation, U.S. forces killed an estimated 200,000 Filipino civilians and extracted untold natural resources.

As a testament to the strength and skills of the resistance movement the American's needed a larger calibre bullet as the standard .38 won't stop the Filipino fighters and thus the .45 round was invented.

Today the people of the Ilonggo Nation continue their daily struggle for freedom and survival, whilst still retaining a smile on their faces
